Creativity in a Safe Container

What is a visual journal and why is it worth trying?

A visual journal is a safe place for creative expression.  It is not a sketchbook in that you are honing your skills/ techniques as an artist.  Like a traditional writing journal, we are not hung up on perfection, conclusions or drafts.  Instead we are using a variety of art materials, safely contained in a book to help us feel more calm, mindful, in control, and able to release unwanted emotions.

What if I can’t draw?

I hear this all the time! It’s not about creating photo realistic images.  More often than not we are working with abstract images and processes to bring us into the moment and strengthen our ability to go with the flow. Instead of just trying to sketch, we can play with collage, mandalas, patterns/ doodles, black-out poems, layered mixed media etc.

What kind of a book should I use?

I suggest using something you already have.  There is no right or wrong here.  My 2 favorite types of books to use are a 9 x 12 hardcover sketchbook or an old hardcover novel for an altered-book journal, sometimes referred to as junk journals. A sketchbook is clean and empty, an old novel is messy and ready for upcycled fun. But any notebook will do.
